This piece on romantic things to do in London is a guest post from Kelly of A Pair of Passports.
Compared to the likes of Paris and Florence, London may not often be considered one of the most romantic places in Europe. However, with its incredible history and gorgeous architecture, it’s hard not to fall in love in London – and with London. It definitely is a great spot for a romantic European getaway.
It feels like the city is always changing, surprising its residents and visitors with new things to do and places to explore. As a couple that loves date night, though, we have learned to find the romance amidst the hustle and bustle. Here are fifteen romantic things to do and romantic places to go in London:
15 Romantic Things to Do in London
Have a picnic in St. James Park
Wine and dine in style (and with a view of Buckingham Palace) at London’s St. James Park. It’s a quieter park than most in the evening, and a lovely place to wander around before parking and picnicking.
For a luxurious picnic, hampers can be purchased at Fortnum & Mason up the road.
Alternatively, pop into any M&S or Waitrose and pick up a bunch of ready to eat goodies and a bottle of wine. Aside from buying your goodies, this is one of many romantic AND free things to do in London!
Romantic London activities like a stroll around St. James Park are the perfect way to enjoy the city!
Sip wine by candlelight at Gordon’s Wine Bar
Gordon’s Wine Bar is perhaps the coziest spot in London – if you can get a seat inside, that is! Get there early and stake out a spot, then sit and enjoy a bottle of wine by candlelight.
As you sit there chatting, you can feel the rumble of the trains going by. If you’re feeling peckish, they offer a lovely selection of cheeses.
PS: Make sure you’re well-dressed for your evening. This London packing list will help you prepare for your trip!
There is nothing more wonderful than experiencing the most beautiful London landmarks at sunset.
City Cruises offers a range of cruises down the Thames, including themed dinner cruises and show cruises. The routes vary, but almost all of them pass under Tower Bridge and float by Big Ben & the Houses of Parliament. Here is a Thames River cruise that runs from Westminster to Greenwich.
It’s a great way to get unobstructed views of some of London’s most popular sights. Plus, champagne on a boat at sunset (such as with this evening river cruise)? Sounds like one of the most romantic things to do in London at night.
Head southwest towards Richmond and spend the day at the Royal Botanical Gardens and Kew. The beautiful landscape features 60,000+ plants, glasshouses, and even a treetop walkway.
Learn about bees at The Hive, admire the stunning Palm House, and marvel at the Princess of Wales Conservatory, where you can transport yourselves throughout the world as you explore the ten different climatic zones.
Each season looks completely different at Kew, so it’s worth a visit year round. At Christmas, the entire place is transformed into Christmas at Kew, which features innovative light displays, Christmas goodies, and an incredible light show timed to Christmas music.
*Pro Tip: Buy The London Pass to get admission to Kew Gardens and 60 other attractions at one great low price.
London’s culinary scene is absolutely thriving, with new concept restaurants opening all the time featuring cuisines from all over the world.
While there is no shortage of restaurants to choose from, there are definitely some that stand out when it comes to the romance factor. Here are some of the best options for a romantic date night in London:
Cozy up in an Art Deco style booth at Bob Bob Ricard while indulging in the ‘Press for Champagne’ button
Dine with an incredible view over London at Aqua Shard
Add in a bit of mystery and book an experience at Dans Le Noir, where you will dine in total darkness
Feast on oysters at Wright Bros. cozy South Kensington location before sharing a bottle of champagne in the stylish basement bar
It seems like a new skyscraper is revealed in London each year, and every one offers some sort of bar or restaurant with stunning views. Head up to any of them for an evening drink and to watch the sunset. This will be the perfect end to your romantic day in London.
Or, for a great view of all of the skyscrapers, head to The Aviary.
There’s plenty to do and see on a romantic London getaway!
Cozy up by a pub fire with a board game
In the summer, London’s famous pub beer gardens flourish; in the winter, it’s the pubs that offer an open fireplace. Get to the pub early to snag a spot near the fire, then park yourselves there for a few hours.
Many pubs have board games that you can borrow; otherwise, bring your own deck of cards and just enjoy a lazy afternoon together with a couple of pints.
*Or, relax at a spa with one of these great London spa deals, an ideal option for London romantic activities.
Wander around one of London’s picturesque neighborhoods
Spend a day just wandering around hand in hand, finding your own favorite spots that you can return to every time you visit London. This is one of our favorite couple things to do in London. After all, there’s nothing more romantic than having a memory that is yours together.
Some great neighborhoods to explore include South Kensington, Notting Hill, Hampstead, and Greenwich.
There are so many delightful places to explore in London for couples in search of romance!
Watch theatre by candlelight at the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse
The Sam Wanamaker Playhouse, an indoor theatre next to Shakespeare’s Globe, hosts performances year round. The performances are lit entirely by candlelight, with actors even carrying around candelabras while acting.
It’s an incredibly romantic form of entertainment! Next door, the beautifully decorated Swan offers great pre & post-theatre dining options, as well as drinks.
Is there anything more romantic than trying new things together? Spend an afternoon wandering around Borough Market, tasting every food you can imagine.
Stalls offer everything from fresh fruit & veg to warm baked goods. There’s even an entire shop dedicated to olive oil! Finish off your visit with a street food lunch and a wander along South Bank.
While the London Eye is usually classed as perhaps one of the most touristy things to do in London, there is nothing better than admiring one of London’s most iconic sights, Big Ben, with a glass of champagne in hand.
Book one of the ‘special pods’ for your trip around the London Eye to enjoy a champagne or chocolate tasting during your journey.
Alternatively, if you want to go above and beyond in the name of romance, a full pod can be booked for a private dinner.
Just another one of those romantic couples things to do in London!
Sneak out for a midnight meal at Duck & Waffle
Duck & Waffle not only overs stunning views over London and delicious menu options, but it is also open 24/7. Beat the crowds by sneaking out for a meal in the middle of the night. The late night menu is surprisingly robust!

Take a walk in Hampstead Heath
Despite its extremely central location, Hampstead Heath feels totally disconnected from the hustle and bustle of London. Go for a wander through the park with your loved one and you will immediately feel like you have been transported to the countryside.
On the north side of the park, Kenwood House is a historic home featuring an impressive art collection. On the south side, it’s all about Parliament Hill, which offers stunning views over London.
Enjoying views like this is a classic romantic thing to do in London and all around the world!
Eat breakfast in bed – with a view!
Many of London’s five star hotels offer five star views. Shangri-La at the Shard offers stunning views over St. Paul’s Cathedral, while Marriott County Hall faces Big Ben & the Houses of Parliament.
Most of the hotels located along the famous Park Lane look out over Hyde Park. And, if you prefer the look of interiors to the exterior view, consider staying at the beautifully designed Artist Residence.

Savannah, Georgia
Submitted by Sydney Richardson
Savannah, Georgia is a charming Southern city that is perfect for a romantic getaway. Grab your partner and start planning a long weekend in Savannah in order to both relax and enjoy the best that the city has to offer.
One of the best things for couples to do in Savannah is to simply take a romantic stroll through the historic district. Start by grabbing a refreshing frozen daiquiri from Wet Willie’s on River Street and then make your way down through the Historic District (yes, you can take your drink with you!), stopping at the beautiful historic squares and taking in the ornate antebellum architecture. End your stroll at Forsyth Park, home to Savannah’s beautiful and frequently photographed fountain. Weddings are often held here, making this a very romantic spot!
When it comes to romantic Southern getaways, Savannah always sits at the top of the list!
There’s nothing better on a getaway with your partner than a nice, romantic dinner. Make reservations at The Olde Pink House – one of the city’s top restaurants. Here you’ll be able to sample delicious Southern cuisine and unique cocktails – don’t miss out on the fried chicken, collard greens, or the specialty “Pink Lady” cocktail. For a fun dessert after dinner, walk down to Leopold’s Ice Cream. It’s worth the wait, and the line moves rather quickly.
Savannah is home to several romantic accommodation options. Consider staying at the Andaz Savannah, a wonderful luxury hotel in the Historic District.
What better romantic Southern getaway is there than the ‘wedding capital of the South’ and one of the most popular honeymoon destinations in this region of the country. Gatlinburg is an incredibly accessible location – 60% of the country’s population can arrive there for their romantic getaway within one day, making it one of the best southeast vacation ideas for couples!
Gatlinburg has something for everyone, no matter what type of couple you are. There are hundreds of things to do in Gatlinburg. For adventure and outdoor lovers, you have access to the most visited national park in the country, ziplining, white water rafting, ATVs, and much more.
If shopping is the thing that gets you both excited, there are a ton of small and unique shops in Gatlinburg and even more if you head to nearby Pigeon Forge.
In terms of food, have a romantic dinner at The Melting Pot or check out a more casual spot at Ole Red or Mellow Mushroom – you’ll find options for dietary restrictions at all of them.
While in Gatlinburg, you can choose to stay close to town where you can walk to all of the wine and moonshine tastings or you can head further into the mountains and stay at a remote and romantic cabin or chalet.
For all these reasons and more, Gatlinburg is the perfect option for a romantic weekend getaway away for couples.

Washington DC is one of the most romantic getaways in the south because it is lush with free things to do, incredible dining experiences, hiking, hand in hand strolling, beautiful architecture, and some of the most stunning sunrises and sunsets!
Southern vacation destinations like DC are excellent for couples in search of romance and history!
Some of the top things for couples to do are: stay at the super romantic Inn at Little Washington AND dine at their 3 Michelin Star restaurant, do one of the most romantic things to do in dc at night: monuments by moonlight tour and snuggle your loved one, catch a sunrise on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial overlooking the Reflecting Pond, enjoy one of our many lovely spas after a day of amazing adventures, visit during the cherry blossom season in the spring and walk through the Tidal Basin, take in a show at the Kennedy Center, and stroll The National Mall and enjoy a picnic overlooking the Washington Monument.
While DC offers a bevy of amazing activities for couples – you will never get bored because almost every major attraction is free, which is great on your wallet.
While Little Rock might not be the first city that springs to mind when you think about romance, it should be. Its location on the Arkansas River gives couples with a variety of interests plenty to do or not do if that’s the choice.
Let the romance begin downtown at the Capital Hotel, a quintessentially Southern hotel that even has its own front porch. Rooms are spacious with four-poster beds and bathtubs big enough for two. For couples that want to stay in, the hotel has two restaurants on-site. One Eleven and the Capital Bar & Grille, both serve one of a kind food, handcrafted cocktails and decadent—essential for romance—desserts.
The Hotel is just steps from the beautiful riverfront that’s perfect for wandering hand in hand with your love. The Vogel Schwartz Sculpture Garden, Riverfront Park and the River Market together, have over 100 works of art to search out. Continue to stroll along the river and the bridges, which are colorfully lit up at night, take on a dreamy romantic glow. The bridge at the Clinton Presidential Park is a pedestrian bridge perfect for romance and great views of the city.
Couples can wrap up the evening with a nightcap at 42 Bar and Table. Located on the ground floor of the Clinton Library, that’s also on the riverfront, the restaurant has views like nowhere else in the city. It’s a cozy, intimate setting and another reason that makes Little Rock a perfect Southern city for romance.
One place that is definitely underrated as a Southern romantic getaway in the United States is the Eastern Shore of Virginia. While there is plenty to do there for travelers heading to the detached part of the Commonwealth, it really shines as a romantic place to spend a long weekend or even longer! The unusual strip of land has the Atlantic Ocean on one side and the Chesapeake Bay on the other, leaving it exposed to several elements and, in turn, making the landscapes really unusual and different than the rest of the state.
You’ll find sand dunes, wild beaches, and low-country on the Eastern Shore. It is the ideal spot for couples seeking a varied vacation with several activities from kayaking through the low country to water sports on the open seas.
Love this romantic Southern vacation destination!
A famous place to relax for a few days is Cape Charles, a small beachside town that has large, wooden houses, a famous lighthouse, and many charming and romantic restaurants offering up some of the tastiest seafood in the state of Virginia. Alternatively, you can drive up the Eastern Shore to the wild and wonderful city of Chincoteague, made famous for its wild ponies. The city is colorful and has several trails you can stroll with your partner on… all while scoping out the majestic horses calling the land home.
Several other places get recognition for being cozy places to go for a romantic weekend or vacation, but I definitely suggest the Eastern Shore in Virginia for a fun and beautiful alternative to the others!

Even though it’s now part of Alabama, in many ways Mobile is like a smaller version of New Orleans in Louisiana. And in fact, it was the original capital of the French Louisiana territory, which explains the similarities and the French-inspired architecture. While New Orleans has a well-deserved reputation as a wild and raucous party town, Mobile is more mellow. This makes it an ideal alternative not only for families but also for couples looking for a quiet, romantic getaway.
Start your explorations with the downtown area, where the streets are shaded by huge oak trees strung with Spanish moss. Lining both sides of Dauphin Street, George Street and other downtown thoroughfares are huge antebellum mansions, a few of which are still furnished with period furnishings and are open to the public for visits. When touring these homes, you’ll feel like you’ve stepped onto the set of Gone With the Wind.
How romantic is this view?
The best time to visit Mobile is in the spring when the weather is not too hot and the city is filled with pink and white azalea blooms. There’s even a local festival to mark the occasion, called the Azalea Trail Festival. Local high school girls are chosen to represent the city as “Azalea Trail Maids”. They dress up in pastel-colored hoop skirts with matching parasols and play the part of the hospitable Southern belle. Mobile also has plenty of great restaurants, featuring seafood as well as a growing number of veggie options.
Editor’s Suggestion for Where to Stay in Mobile AL: The Battle House Renaissance Hotel & Spa
Perched on a ridge in Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains, Primland is one of the most dramatic and romantic places to stay in the greater Washington DC region. The resort offers luxurious accommodations in a stunning natural setting and a wealth of fun activities for outdoor-loving couples.
Guests at Primland can choose a spacious suite in the main lodge, a cottage room at the edge of a gorge, or a suite near the resort’s award-winning golf course. Couples willing to splurge should book one of the three stunning Tree Houses that seem to float over the surrounding mountains. The Tree Houses are more rustic, but the setting is hard to beat. Our favorite rooms for romance are in the Pinnacle Cottages, which boast a wall of windows and a private porch with dramatic mountain views.
When you’re ready to leave the room, there are some uniquely fun ways to enjoy Primland’s 12,000-acre property. Get your adrenalin pumping with an RTV ride over rocky dirt roads to a mountain viewpoint. Take a leisurely horseback ride, or try your hand at sporting clays, archery, mountain biking, and other outdoor activities. When you’re ready to relax, head to the spa for an indulgent treatment. At night, gaze at distant planets in Primland’s onsite observatory. Whatever diversions you choose, Primland’s natural setting provides a beautiful backdrop to romance.

With its gorgeous natural surroundings, forward-thinking environmental consciousness, charming atmosphere, fantastic foodie scene, and array of outdoor recreation activities, Asheville is arguably the ultimate Blue Ridge Mountain town for couples. But the city’s current status as the Portland of the South is even more impressive when you consider the fact that much of downtown Asheville verged on the cusp of demolition just a few decades ago.
Asheville is one of those romantic getaway spots in the South that is perfect all year round!
The city has exploded in popularity in recent years thanks in part to its countless stylish boutiques, art galleries, hip breweries, and live music venues. But you can still find deals on romantic mountain cabins in the surrounding hills (including many with open-hearth fireplaces, hot tubs, and stunning scenic views). Then head into town to sample some of the best restaurants in Asheville, including Bouchon, Posana, 12 Bones Smokehouse, Plant, and more.
Just outside of town, you’ll find hiking trails for all skill levels in Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Linville Gorge, Mount Mitchell (the tallest peak east of the Mississippi), Pisgah National Forest, and all along the Blue Ridge Parkway. Also, be sure to check out the uber-romantic Biltmore Estate, the largest home in America, which has 250 rooms, 8,000 acres of gardens and trails, and the nation’s most-visited winery.
Editor’s Suggestion for Where to Stay in Asheville NC: The Omni Grove Park Inn
Don’t let the name fool you, Lynchburg, Virginia is an unknown secret, a hidden gem if you will, and one of the most romantic places in the South.
Start your romantic Lynchburg getaway with an easy stroll on the River Walk Trail. The trail winds through Riverfront Park, historic downtown Lynchburg, ending on Percival’s Island.
After your walk, check into the Craddock Terry Hotel, a former shoe factory, now a luxury waterfront hotel. Offering views of the James River, the Blue Ridge Mountains, or historic downtown Lynchburg, the elegant rooms include daily continental breakfast.
Relax over dinner at Shoemakers. Then pop into the Academy of the Arts to enjoy a performance, listen to a talk or take an art class. Perhaps recreate the pottery scene from “Ghost.”
Enjoy a relaxing 60-minute couples massage in the therapeutic Salt Cave at London’s Salt Spa. The minerals and salts, imported, from the Himalayas and Poland, remove toxins and impurities out of the body. You’ll walk out (more like massage coma stumble) feeling refreshed and relaxed. The spa is a short 18-minute drive from Lynchburg.
Add a little spice to your evening with salsa dancing every Thursday night from 9pm to 11pm in downtown Lynchburg. Never danced the salsa or a little unsure of your footing? Come early at 8pm for lessons. A $5 cover charge (cash only) applies. This fun, inexpensive evening is bound to encourage a night of passion and romance.
From romantic riverfront walks to salsa dancing, consider visiting Lynchburg, Virginia for your next Southern romantic getaway.
Strolling through the vineyard, picking your own fruit, and getting happily tipsy as you watch the sunset over the majestic Blue Ridge Mountains. Can it get more romantic? Oh yea, you get to sleep on the property in a cute tiny home and wake up to the sound of chickens clucking and the smell of a hot, fresh breakfast cooking just up the hill. Chattooga Belle Farm is one of the hidden gems of the upstate South Carolina area – owned by a sweet couple who really go out of their way to offer a special experience. It is a great place to spend a weekend away as a couple – with a restaurant, distillery, small cabins, and RV sites available as well.
This is such a lovely romantic vacation spot in the South!
Located in Long Creek, SC, Chattooga Belle is close to lots of hikes, waterfalls, lakes, and other great outdoor activities. If you’re wanting to check out other wineries, head east about an hour to try out Victoria Valley Vineyards or hop the state line over to Georgia for plenty of other options within an hour, like Tiger Mountain Vineyards and Yonah Mountain Vineyards. Have time for a longer trip? The pretty little city of Greenville, SC; the unique German-themed town of Helen, GA; and the waterfall-heavy county of Brevard, NC, are all within a 1.5-hour drive!

Nashville is a great city for a romantic getaway due to its food scene, nightlife, and overall ambiance. Nashville is definitely considered a “foodie city”, and makes for the perfect spot for a couple’s weekend trip. There are many Southern food variations of their signature hot chicken, barbeque, and biscuits at restaurants around the city. At night, head on over to Broadway’s bars and lounges to grab a few drinks and listen to country music or cover bands.
Nashville is one of the best couples getaway destinations in the South with a ton of great night life!
If you and your significant other are country music fans, then Nashville is the place to visit. It is considered the birthplace of country music and tourists can visit famous locations such as the RCA Recording Studios, the Grand Ole Opry, and Ryman Auditorium.
The Belle Meade Plantation is another place to stop to soak in some history, and if you enjoy a glass of wine or beer, there are breweries and a winery around the city as well. Some other things to do are to visit Vanderbilt University and take a tour of the Hermitage, Andrew Jackson’s home. A weekend getaway in Nashville is perfect for those who would like to kick back, eat, drink, listen to music, and enjoy each other as a couple for a few days of peace.
Editor’s Suggestion for Where to Stay in Nasvhille TN: The Hermitage
I have 99 praises and the beach is one. Coastal Mississippi is incredibly easy to love and is a perfect romantic US Gulf Coast destination—with phenomenal beach sunsets to fun outdoor adventures to remarkable meals.
Create very special private memories for your anniversary, date, or romantic trip in superior relaxed luxury romantic lodging, like The Roost or Inn at Ocean Springs or Bay Town Inn. When the time comes to leave your cozy suite, enjoy the incredible beauty of the soulful and prevalent live oak trees, especially the Avenue of Oaks (featuring Friendship Oak) at USM-Long Beach and along Washington Ave in Ocean Springs (and on the adjacent streets).
This view is just one reason why this is one of the best couples getaways in the South!
In Ocean Springs, visit various art galleries and craft shops, hold your honey’s hand while exploring the Walter Anderson Museum of Art, attend a festival or the farmers market, and pop into Vestige for an elegant lunch or dinner.
At the New Orleans end of Coastal Mississippi, Bay St Louis is another romantic small town, offering a different but empowering vibe, with frequent festivals, locally-owned shops and restaurants, and a waterfront setting (perfect for sunrises and sunsets). Also catch majestic and romantic sunsets from Henderson Point, Front Beach, Ocean Springs pier, Blind Tiger Biloxi, or pretty much anywhere out on the water. Sweet Coastal Mississippi adventures range from spa treatments to kayaking from Pascagoula River Audubon Center to a fun hands-on experience with Biloxi Shrimping Tour.
Durham, North Carolina is a city that was built on rustic tobacco and is easily a swoon-worthy destination for reconnecting with your partner. The city is filled with reminders of its past- from retro tobacco signs to the iconic Lucky Strike tower at the American Tobacco Campus, the Bull City has a charm of its own.
Dress to the nines and hit the town for world-class cuisine at St. James Seafood followed by craft cocktails in the basement lounge of Kingfisher for an intimate evening. One of the most popular romantic things to do in Durham is to catch the sunset from the rooftop cocktail bar at The Durham hotel. Clasp hands and breathe in each other as you enjoy the retro midcentury modern décor, fresh oysters, and stunning cityscape.
Looking for a more laid-back way to rekindle your love? Some of Durham’s casual restaurants are so delicious that you might dream of moving here with your sweetheart! After filling your bellies with some Southern staples and laughs, hit Boxcar Arcade to duke it out together over some Mortal Combat. When you’ve run out of coins head next door to Urban Axes and have some laughs seeing who is better at throwing axes.
Durham, North Carolina also has incredible outdoor activities. From wandering the rose bushes at Sarah P. Duke Gardens to hiking the trails along the Eno River, opting outside is one of our fondest romantic things to do. On these trails is where we dream about our lives together while watching the river slowly float by.

Charleston, South Carolina is an extremely romantic city to visit in the South. It is a top choice for destination weddings and honeymoons, as couples can’t resist its charming cobblestone alleyways, gaslit streets, and colorful historical homes. Charleston is the perfect city for strolling hand in hand with a loved one while taking in beautiful surroundings.
Couples who visit Charleston enjoy plentiful restaurant options that pack tons of ambiance and delicious menus. The most famous restaurant for a memorable date night is Husk, which specializes in modern takes on traditional southern favorites. Two more great choices are Fig, which comes just as highly recommended as Husk, and Circa 1886, especially if you are staying onsite at the dreamy Wentworth Mansion.
This is one of the most beautiful cities in the country, and is a perfect Southern romantic destination!
Charleston also offers the perfect opportunity to slow down and simply stroll together under the palmetto trees. It’s easy to fall in love with the rows of colonial-era stucco-covered homes, painted in various shades of cheerful pastels. The unique patina on some of these facades, where the stucco is peeling away from the brick underneath, really sends the charm over the top. Finally, it would be remiss to ignore Charleston’s Waterfront Park, which offers beautiful scenery along the Cooper River and views of landmarks like Fort Sumpter in the distance.
For the ultimate romantic experience in Charleston, stay at a historic bed and breakfast, such as the delightful 1837 Bed and Breakfast. These places abound in quiet intimacy while offering a peek into Charleston’s history.
Memphis is the perfect town for a romantic getaway. This vibrant city sits on the Mississippi River and exudes southern charm. It is one of the more historically significant cities in the south with a culture build around music, cuisine and hospitality.
To plan your perfect Memphis romantic adventure, first pick a romantic hotel. The Peabody Hotel, in downtown Memphis is a legendary landmark in the city. It manages to effortlessly combine old-world charm with modern conveniences. The rooms are recently renovated, and the restaurant offers classic gourmet French cuisine at Chez Philippe.
The best part of staying at The Peabody is the March of the Ducks. Every day, twice a day a flock of trained ducks troop from a fountain in the lobby, down a hallway and into an elevator that whisks them to their home on another floor. All this is accompanied by marching music. It is certainly unique.
Tear yourself away from the hotel and head to nearby Beal Street to listen to some of the best Blues around. The street is lined with Blues clubs where a musically inclined couple could club hop and indulge to their hearts’ content. Nearby are jazz and blues museums.
Other can’t miss activities in Memphis include tasting the local BBQ and craft beer, a perfect combination.
Don’t leave Memphis without visiting Graceland, the home of local-boy-done-good Elvis Presley.
Top off your romantic getaway with a visit to the fabulous Memphis Botanic Garden because, what’s more romantic than a rose garden?
One of the best romantic weekend getaways in the south is the Big Easy, aka New Orleans. Don’t let the party reputation this destination has fool you into thinking that there’s a lack of romance here.
Even one step off of Bourbon Street has a completely different vibe and if you let the party reputation scare you away from this destination you will be missing out on one of the most unique places to visit in the United States.
Some of the most romantic activities include strolling around and exploring both the French Quarter and the enchanting Garden District. Be swept away by the beautiful architecture in the French Quarter, the gas lanterns, and charming terrace balconies with leafy greens decorating them.
How romantic is this???
Take an old-fashioned trolley car to the Garden District where you can walk among some of the most magnificent historic mansions and homes in this lush, green neighborhood with weeping willows and gardens. Hence the name, Garden District.
While you’re in the Garden District don’t miss having lunch and the famous $.25 martinis at Commander’s Palace. By nightfall, be sure to catch a jazz performance at Preservation Hall, one of the most historic jazz halls of all time.
Afterward, wander over to Frenchmen Street for some of the best live music venues for jazz and a lively atmosphere. Have a romantic light snack with wine and intimate live performances at Bacchanal Wine & Spirits; how sweet does this sound for a romantic couples trip in the South?
And last, but not least, be sure to save room for those famous beignets.

If you are looking for the perfect romantic getaway, look no further than the beautiful coastal area of Gulf Shores and Orange Beach, Alabama. Both of these destinations may not be the first places you think about visiting but if you are looking for a relaxing, romantic break, there are not many places we would recommend ahead of this gorgeous Gulf Coast area.
Whether you are newly married couple or simply looking to rekindle a little romance in your relationship, Gulf Shores and Orange Beach offers an eclectic blend of attractions, local restaurants offering decadent cuisine options and a collection of awesome accommodation
options to satisfy every budget.
When it comes to the best things to do in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach, head over to The Wharf for a hands-on experience making your very own bathroom products at High Cotton Bath Company. Alternatively, perhaps you want to showcase your artistic skills by visiting Sandcastle University to create a memorable masterpiece. Regardless of whether you hit the beach for this experience, you won’t want to miss spending some time on the 32 miles of pristine sandy beaches.
Stay at the incredible Turquoise Place by Spectrum Resorts to enjoy a jacuzzi hot tub on your private balcony overlooking the Gulf, while the list of local restaurants to choose from is endless – a couple of favorites include Sunliner Diner for a retro-themed experience dating back to the 1950s and GT’s on the Bay for a romantic meal overlooking Wolf Bay.
End your visit to Gulf Shores and Orange Beach by taking an evening cruise into the Gulf to enjoy what we consider to be one of the most incredible sunsets at one of the top Southern vacation destinations for couples.

Ah, Chicago.
The Windy City. The Second City. The City of the Big Shoulders.
The City of…Love?
No, wait. That’s not right.
But as a matter of fact, it’s not such an offbeat claim. There are plenty of romantic things to do in Chicago if you know where to look and you will, by the end of this post.
Named best big city twice by Condé Nast Traveler (yes, beating New York), it’s no doubt that Chi city deserves a spot on your must-visit list. And in case you still need convincing, here are 18 more reasons in the form of romantic things to do in Chicago.
The Top Romantic Things to Do in Chicago, Illinois
1. Indulge in Something Sweet
Chicago is a foodie city, no doubt, and sweet treats are definitely part of the mix. Gourmet donuts are a thing in the Windy City and you’ll have your pick of several shops churning out the fried dough. Grab a hot cup of coffee to balance out the sweet lemon pistachio old-fashioned donut from Stan’s (a personal favorite) and check out this list of where to get the best donuts in Chicago for even more choices. Why not try them all?
Visiting in the winter months? Head to Mindy’s Bakery and enjoy gourmet hot cocoa topped with large homemade marshmallows. Go for the hot chocolate, stay for the brunch. A perfect addition to your list of romantic things to do in Chicago in winter!
What a sweet romantic thing to do in Chicago.
And, you can never go wrong with a big tub of the city’s famous Garrett popcorn. Get the Garret mix — a sweet and salty blend of caramel and cheddar cheese coated popcorn. This also makes a great gift for someone back home!
2. Seek out Chicago Style Pizza
Spend some time whipping up a delicious meal with your honey while going behind the scenes of Chicago’s deep-dish pizza. Sure, you could simply go out for a saucy slice of Chicago deep dish pizza, but for a real adventure, take a class and make the pie yourself.
Or, take a pizza tour and hop from pizzeria to pizzeria for a few hours. Find the slice you both love best and ship a box of that pizza to your home so you can relive the memory later.
3. See the City Light Up from Above
When it comes to Chicago romantic things to do, heading to a rooftop bar is a major must-do.
As you might imagine, Chicago has a slew of rooftop bars with stunning views. Make your way to Cindy’s Rooftop, located in the Chicago Athletic Association Hotel, around sunset. Grab a drink (may I recommend the Grey Garden?) and head to the balcony for sweeping views of Millennium Park, the Art Institute and the lake.
Not afraid of heights? Don’t skip the Signature Lounge on the 96th floor of what was formerly known as the John Hancock Center. Have a cocktail with the whole city sprawled out and lit up below you. Ladies, don’t miss snapping some pictures of the view from the women’s restroom to share with your beau! It’s known as one of the best views in the city.
Feeling peckish? Have a romantic dinner at The Signature Room, one floor down.
A little laughter goes a long way in keeping the playful side of your relationship alive. Steve Carell and Tina Fey are only two of many famous comedians Chicago has churned out, and many got their start training and performing improv at Second City.
Spend an evening laughing with your sweetheart at this iconic Chicagoland comedy club. Enjoy food and drink while you marvel at gutsy improv performers. This is one of those Chicago date night ideas that is always a winner!
Theatre or live comedy? A perfect Chicago date night!
5. Be Active Together
Feeling restless? If you’re visiting Chicago in the winter months, lace up your ice skates and hit the Maggie Daley Park Skating Ribbon. You’ll join families and other lovebirds as you glide along in a winter wonderland, with the city’s skyscrapers towering beautifully around you.
Or, take a day trip to Starved Rock. Less than a couple hours’ drive away you’ll find a quiet escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. Hike the park’s beautiful trails and take in waterfall views along the way.
If walking is your activity of choice, be sure to window shop along Michigan Avenue. Know as The Magnificent Mile, or Mag Mile, this street is lined with upscale shops. You can also walk the city’s River Walk hand-in-hand, popping into different shops for wine, gelato or even sit down meals as riverboats pass you by. This is such a romantic Chicago thing to do!
Want to keep it more low key? Watch other people be active instead! Chicago is home to some great sports teams: the Cubs, White Sox, Blackhawks, Bulls and Bears, and watching them play is one of the top things for couples to do in Chicago!
Whatever your sport, Chicago likely has a team for it worth watching. Get decked out in home team colors and head to a game. Cheer on a team together, and don’t forget the snacks!
7. Listen to the Music
Romantic Chicago is often found in its music. Take in smooth jazz tunes at Green Mill, also known as Al Capone’s old hangout. (Psst: check out this tour to experience more mobster history in Chicago).
Nowadays, it’s all about the chill ambiance and great music. Another crowd favorite is Kingston Mines for more jazz and blues music. Get dressed up and hit the town for a relaxing, musical night.
Blues and jazz not quite your scene? Try the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, instead. Or, check out a live band at The Vic Theater for something more upbeat.
Gotta see the bean during your romantic couples trip to Chicago!
8. Take a River Cruise
The architecture in Chicago demands admiration, and there’s no better way to take it in than through one of the architecture river cruises. Feel the wind in your hair as you cruise by beautiful city scenes and your guide provides context for the impressive buildings all around you. This has to be one of the best ideas for romantic dates in Chicago.
Book a luxurious experience at Aire Ancient Baths, housed in a preserved building that charms with its exposed brick and industrial columns. Splurge on a massage, red wine soak or another calming ritual with your sweetie. A great way to unwind and increase intimacy in a unique way during your couples trip to Chicago!
10. See the Stars at the Adler Planetarium
Make memories at the very first planetarium in America. The planetarium often puts on celestial shows and creative events, like Adler After Dark or Sun Salutation Yoga. Explore the starry exhibits together, and don’t forget to step outside for a peek at the real stars and a gorgeous view of the Chicago skyline!
Often booked as a popular wedding venue, a fun visit to the Adler certainly shouts romance in Chicago.
So many romantic Chicago views!
11. Engage in Friendly Competition at Guthrie’s Tavern
Hunker down with a board game and a beer at this local bar that’s all about laid-back fun. There’s nothing like some healthy competition to keep the spark alive over Guthrie’s cheese pizza and chilled drinks. Or, if it’s more your speed, a hot tea or coffee.
A great choice for fun things to do in Chicago for couples!
12. Explore an Upscale Food Hall
Grab a quick and classy lunch at one of Chicago’s chic food halls, like Revival or Chicago French Market. Choose a few different dishes from different establishments to make yourselves a fun tasting menu, of sorts. And, if you’re both craving different cuisines there’s no better way to compromise on where to grab a meal.
Once the sun has set, head to Buckingham Fountain in Chicago’s Grant Park for a stellar light show. The fountain is one of the largest in the world and was inspired by the Latona Fountain at the Palace of Versailles. From May to mid-October, the fountain puts on a beautiful water and light show for 20 minutes every hour.
With the city skyline lit up behind it, the fountain’s own water and light show is even more spectacular to behold. This is a very romantic Chicago sight.
14. Visit Navy Pier and Watch the Fireworks
While touristy, Navy Pier is a fun area to spend some time taking a leisurely stroll along the shoreline or riding the Centennial Wheel. From Memorial Day through Labor Day, you can also catch a magnificent fireworks display. If you’re in town on a Wednesday night, catch the show at 9:30pm or at 10:15pm on a Saturday night. Touristy or not, this is one of the best couple things to do in Chicago!
15. Spend Time on the Beach
Chicago’s beach is truly a beauty and it can certainly be one the most romantic places in Chicago. You have sand and lake on one hand, flanked by the city skyline on the other. Walk, jog or bike the lakefront trail together or simply set up shop on the sand and enjoy each other’s company to the sound of crashing waves.
16. Have a Picnic at Milton Lee Olive Park
A bit of a hidden gem, Milton Lee Olive Park provides a quieter place to play on a nice day. Pack a picnic and spend a couple of hours catching up on life and taking in views of the city and nearby Navy Pier. Picnics are always a classic romantic couples thing to do in Chicago or anywhere.
So many fun things to do on a Chicago couples trip!
17. Enjoy Movies or Music in Millennium Park
There’s beauty around every turn at Millennium Park and if you’re visiting in the summer months, be sure to catch a show at the Jay Pritzker Pavilion. Bring wine and snacks, a picnic blanket or lawn chairs, and settle in for an enjoyable evening outdoors.
There are plenty of romantic hotels in Chicago, but if you want to stay in an absolutely gorgeous hotel with a rooftop bar, outdoor pool, fantastic onsite restaurant, and is located just up the road from AIRE ancient baths, check out The Viceroy. It’s just classic romance all around, especially if you add on the date night package!
When you first think of America’s most romantic cities, Chicago may not pop into your mind. At the end of the day, it’s a city filled with kind, hard-working people who love good food and good times. You can be sure that if a romantic weekend away is what you’re looking for, you absolutely can find that in this town.
